The goal for this project is to create opportunities to talk to other farmers about your seed growing questions and challenges. We are farmers who want to work together to help each other be as successful as possible in the seed industry.
We launched our first Meet-Up at the end of February 2024, and are continuing to host them monthly. You can find details about about how to join the next meeting on our Events page. Participation is open to all seed folks whether you are an experienced grower, new farmer, or just seed curious.
If you’d like to be involved in the Meet-Ups working group, or have a discussion topic to suggest please get in touch!
Participants can submit their ideas, and we select the most popular topic while trying to keep it relevant to seed growing activities that are likely to be happening at the time of the meeting.
Some possible topic include:
seed contracts – how to get them, what makes one better than another, advice on when and how to communicate with seed companies
logistics of seed saving – isolation distances, pollination, seed processing, cleaning strategies, germination testing
seed sourcing – through commercial seed companies, the USDA’s GRIN database, and other possibilities
seed rematriation – returning seeds to their cultural homeland and peoples
variety improvement and breeding projects – how to get started, referrals to people who can help with specific crops, planning and techniques
